6 Tips to Prevent Blocked Drains

We clear blocked drains across the Gold Coast every week, and the honest truth is that most of them did not have to happen. The same handful of habits would have prevented the blockage, the mess and the call-out fee. Here are the six that make the biggest difference, straight from the plumbers who see the consequences.

1. The Toilet Takes Three Things Only

Pee, poo and toilet paper. That is the whole list. Wet wipes, even the packets stamped "flushable", do not break down the way paper does; they snag on the first rough joint and start a blockage that grows with every flush. Cotton buds, dental floss, paper towel and sanitary products belong in the bin beside the toilet, so put a bin beside the toilet.

2. Fat Goes In A Jar, Not The Sink

Hot bacon fat pours like water and sets like candle wax, exactly where you cannot reach it. Over months it narrows the kitchen line until one pasta night finishes the job. Keep an old jar or tin by the stove, pour fats and oils in, and bin it once set. Wipe greasy pans with paper towel before washing and your kitchen drain will outlive the mortgage.

3. Catch Hair Before The Drain Does

A $5 shower strainer catches the hair that would otherwise weave itself into a soapy plug in the trap. Empty it after each shower. If a bathroom drain is already slowing, deal with it now, a slow drain is a blockage on layaway.

4. Feed The Garden, Not The Sewer

Tree roots cause more serious blockages on the Gold Coast than everything above combined. Roots find tiny gaps in older pipe joints, then grow into a net that catches everything. If you are planting, keep thirsty species like figs and camphor laurels well away from where your sewer runs. 5. Keep Stormwater Grates Clear

Walk the yard each season and lift the leaves off stormwater grates, especially before summer storms. Blocked stormwater backs up against the house slab and floods gardens, and it often masquerades as a gutter or downpipe problem when the real blockage is at ground level.

6. Act On The Early Warnings

Drains rarely block without notice. Gurgling after the washing machine empties, water pooling around your ankles in the shower, a whiff of drains on a hot afternoon: these are the pipe asking politely. A quick jet rod and camera inspection at that stage is cheap and scheduled at your convenience. The alternative arrives at 9pm on a public holiday, and it does not knock first.
